"Christianity isn’t a religion. It’s a relationship."

If you’ve spent any time at all in the evangelical world, you’ve probably heard some version of those words. In his book With: Reimagining the way you relate to God (Nelson, 2011) Pastor and author Skye Jethani explains that most of us settle for an erzatz version of this relationship:

* Life FROM God: People in this category are focused on what God will do for them, rather than being interested in God himself. Word-of-faith believers and those who search for God’s blessing on their success both capture the essence of this posture.
* Life OVER God: "Proven formulas and controllable outcomes" define this category, best typlifed by people like the jaded agnostic and the pastor who relies on formulas and organizational principles to build a church.
* Life FOR God: Those in this camp are known for their drive to do great things in God’s service and being a world-changer. "Full time Christian service" is the penultimate expression of faith.
* Life UNDER God: Our role is to learn what God commands, and toil with great intensity to remain within those boundaries. Legalists personify this category.

Jethani noted that he has spent time living in each one of these categories. (Me too.) But he makes a compelling case for learning to live life WITH God – which, he says, is the only sort of relationship God has ever intended to have with us:

The Life With God posture is predicated on the view that relationship is at the core of the cosmos: God the Father with God the Son with God the Holy Spirit. And so we should not be surprised to discover that when God desired to restore his broken relationship with people, he sent his Son to dwell with us.
I just finished reading Skye Jethani’s latest book entitled With: Reimagining the Way You Relate to God. I am trying not resort to hyperbole, but this book was really life changing. In the book Jethani examines five ways most people relate to God. There is life under God, over God, from God and for God. With the possible exception of over God, all of these sound great and they are to some degree, however they can each represent a very unhealthy relationship. And all of them are to one degree or another about fear and control.

People living life under God live in Live to appease God through "strict obedience to moral and ritual commands." This sounds good except at its core is an attempt to control God and our conditions through our obedience.

People living life over God see themselves as managers, and "autonomous beings who have been given a divine manual for operating my life and world and whose fate will ultimately rest upon how well I implement God’s principles and instructions." Again this is an effort to control. We don’t have to pray, we don’t have to depend on God we can just do the right thing and ensure that God will always make things go well.

People living from God fall into consumer Christianity, seeing God as a celestial Santa Claus who we use to get what we want. This is the shortest way to center of the universe syndrome where everything including God revolves around me.

People who live life for God see themselves as servants, "workers created to fulfill a great mission. Their "sense of value is inexorable linked to what (they are) able to accomplish and the magnitude of (their) impact on the world.
I was initially disappointed with With. At first glance it was another one of those one-word titled manuscripts that are a fluff of common facts and anecdotal yarns spun in a way to tickle the minds of those blind to the emperor’s new clothes and designed to land on the bestseller’s list. Malcolm Gladwell did it with Outliers and Blink. And now Skye Jethani, is doing it with With, taking one-word titles to a new low by using a preposition, one of the English language’s lowliest parts of speech containing only a singular meaning. If it seems as though I’m tired of one-word book titles, you have it right. However, my initial reservations were blown to pieces by the time I reached the halfway point in the book. Despite his overuse of prepositions, Jethani has crafted an expose worth reading. Jethani confronts the comfortable mindsets of believers and non-believers in Jesus, exposing those mindsets as deficient to satisfy our deepest longings and relieve our deepest fears. Drawn from his experiences as a pastor and his research into current events, Jethani points to four attitudes that deprive us of intimacy with God and fail to relieve our fears.

Jethani’s four approaches to life are named, defined, and expounded in the first five chapters using personal anecdotes, observations from his life and ministry, and quotes from contemporary literature. Life Over God, the easiest to of the concepts to understand, is life lived apart from God; God is not part of the picture of daily living. Life Under God, is the second least difficult to understand. Commonly termed "legalism", it is the belief that adhering strictly to a set of rules will provide blessing from God.

The next two approaches hit closer to home.

Next to the Bible, best book I’ve ever read.

From the Author

Your beliefs about the Lord Jesus Christ, the Almighty Father in Heaven and your church are beliefs that you hold close to your heart, and rightfully so. However, your beliefs are about to be challenged in a way that you never thought possible.

The story you are about to read is completely true in every sense. There are no exaggerations or embellishments. What you are about to read happened to me several years ago and I’m sharing it with you for one reason and one reason only. I cannot, however, reveal this reason unless you read this story from beginning to end.  If you make it to the end you’ll discover the reason… and I promise you that it will be worth your time.

But let me give you a fair warning: what you are about to read might anger, frustrate and agitate your senses beyond description. This story may force you to examine the beliefs you hold so dear to your heart. This story is not for the weak-minded, nor is it for those who have their sensibilities easily offended.

Many who begin this story won’t make it to the end.  Will you have the courage, the heart and the honesty of character to finish this story to its end?

When I volunteered to write this book review, I had just finished reading the book and had ordered two more copies. As I write this, I don’t actually have the book to reference because we gave away all of our copies (we ordered nine more copies today), so this is probably going to be more of a "convincing argument for reading the book" rather than a "book review."
Muscle and a Shovel, by Michael Shank, is a 386 page paperback book, published June 1, 2011. This book tells the true story of a man who is going about his normal life, working a normal job, hoping for normal things. One day, his normal life is turned upside down when his co-worker, Randall, asks him a simple question. From that point on, Mike and his wife begin a trek down a completely different road than expected.

Mike begins to question what he has always been taught about God and the Bible. He begins talking to friends and relatives and religious experts in his life. He struggles to support what he had always known, and he hopes they will give him some direction. Without satisfactory answers, he goes back to Randall, who guides him back to the Bible at every turn.
Over the course of several months, Mike and Randall’s friendship develops into one of love and trust as they have early morning discussions and Bible studies (usually accompanied by Krispy Kreme donuts). Mike’s emotions are so strong. Sometimes, he shows anger at what he had always believed, awe at the love and gentleness that Randall shows him, and excitement as he tells his wife about all that he learns.
From the very first chapter, this book had me gripped and I couldn’t wait to keep reading.

Shepherd Looks at Psalm 23, A Audio, Cassette – November, 1988 Pdf Download

Shepherd Looks at Psalm 23, A Audio, Cassette – November, 1988
Author: Phillip Keller ID: 0310267986

From the Back Cover

From the unique perspective of first-hand experience, Phillip Keller presents a lively, fascinating devotional commentary on one of the best-loved Bible passages. Equipped with a shepherd’s experience and insight, Mr. Keller leads and prods the reader to the greenest pastures of discovery and coolest waters of fulfillment hidden in the rewards for those willing to follow his careful leading. Experience Psalm 23 in a new way: see with the Shepherd’s eyes, touch with His hands, feel with His heart through this intimate look into the full life of our Lord — the Great Shepherd.

About the Author

The late W. Phillip Keller was born in East Africa and always loved the out-of-doors. He was trained in agronomy and subsequently spent many years on ranches in British Columbia. He lived among and observed sheep and their relationship to the shepherd. Out of this rich, practical experience, came the best-selling book from which this book was excerpted.

This is an abridged version of what is already a short book. I bought it on by mistakte thinking it was the original. The full version of the book is wonderful, and part of what makes it so are the author’s descriptions of his own experiences. Those are largely missing in the abridged version.

Here is a book that expounds Psalm 23 like you won’t likely find elsewhere. Who else could explain Psalm 23 but a shepherd who also is born again? who understands the shepherding concept of God in the Bible? This book will get you thinking "out of the box" of typical interpretation (as sincere as many Bible interpreters are) and bring you into the realm of sheperding reality as it applies to the believer’s life. When God wrote about shepherds and shepherding, He used a lifestyle that the Hebrews would understand. Did you know that the shadow of death is not about dying? Did you know that, while this Psalm is useful for deathbed circumstances, it is most applicable to the living and their daily circumstances? Phillip Keller has done a wonderful job. Even when one reads Charles Spurgeon’s "The Treasury of David" as he and numerous other commentators address Psalm 23, they miss the mark noticeably because they aren’t shepherds. Whether you are going to teach Psalm 23 or use it for prayer, or song worship (for which it is intended), you probably won’t find a better book written than this one. You won’t believe what you’ve been missing in this Psalm. You can’t read it just once, almost just like the Psalm itself.

I was very disappointed to receive this book in the mail and see that it was not the entire book by Phillip Keller, but merely excerpts from it. Nowhere on the description page was this VITAL information given. I was led to believe that this edition was a beautifully illustrated and presented issue of the entire publication. At least has a hassle-free return system.

Paperback: 352 pagesPublisher: Abingdon Press (March 1, 2013)Language: EnglishISBN-10: 142671467XISBN-13: 978-1426714672 Product Dimensions: 5.5 x 0.9 x 8.5 inches Shipping Weight: 1.2 pounds (View shipping rates and policies) Best Sellers Rank: #1,101,891 in Books (See Top 100 in Books) #3974 in Books > Christian Books & Bibles > Literature & Fiction > Mystery & Suspense #27053 in Books > Literature & Fiction > Genre Fiction > Religious & Inspirational #101329 in Books > Literature & Fiction > United States
Darkness Before Dawn contains a phenomenal plot about the effects of drunk driving and having Faith when life spins out of control. Meg Richard’s is a nurse at a local hospital committed to helping sick people. One night, her life falls apart and everything completely changes. Her husband, Steve Richards was on his way back home when his vehicle was struck, and he was killed by a young drunk driver. The police found out that a high school star athlete, James Thomas was behind the wheel. He was injured in the crash but only received minor injuries. James is also a judge’s son and he believed that he would be let off the hook for the crime because of his father’s position and because he got hurt. He felt no guilty for causing the death of another human being. Meg is relentless in making sure that James pays for the death of her husband. And to add more drama to the story, on the same night her husband is killed, she discovers that she is pregnant with their first child. Like anyone who has lost a loved one, she begins to blame God for not preventing the deadly crash. She is torn about keeping the baby or having an abortion. Will she end up having the baby? Will James be convicted of the crime? Can Meg find a way to trust in God again?

I would recommend this wonderful book to anyone who enjoys reading plotlines about real life issues. I believed that this book was written to fit in today’s times. This book covered the effects of drunk driving, grief from losing someone you love, young people not realizing the impact their actions have on others, pregnancy and deciding whether to keep the baby or have an abortion, and trusting God when things go wrong. I immensely connected with the dilemmas that Meg faced and I felt for her when she lost her husband and she was expecting a baby.
Meg is a twenty-eight year old nurse who finds out her husband has been killed by a drunk teen driver – the same day she finds out she is pregnant. She soon comes to the point of being convinced someone needs to pay for her husband’s death. The authorities rebuff her but she manages to find out who the driver was, the son of a wealthy and prominent judge. When it looks like his father’s influence will once again let the popular high school athletic star escape responsibility for his actions, Meg is motivated for revenge. She thinks her husband’s murder has changed her forever. She is no longer the woman she was.

Some 12,000 people are killed by drunk drivers each year (characters in the book remind us – more than once). And many never end up serving prison time. Hence, the plot for this novel.

Evil is a prominent theme in the book. Evil is destroying Meg’s heart. And there is a parallel to the evil of cancer destroying a patient in the hospital, Nancy, whom Meg comes to like. Nancy refuses pain pills because she wants to experience all of life. Meg doesn’t want to feel anything.

Nancy contributes an interesting argument about, if God is good, why is there evil in the world? God has not caused the cancer from which she is dying, Nancy says. God gave man control over the earth because he demanded it. Man invited evil to the earth and we have been suffering ever since.

This is a dark novel. Meg is bent on revenge for 87% of the book (ah, the joys of reading a digital edition). Granted, there is a redeeming end to the book. It was a transforming experience, as God’s work is, but the rest of the book was hard for me to read. It was just dark. I wanted to quit, but had promised to read the book for this review.
